The Gakenke washing station is comprised of 1,900 smallholder farmers across 22 hills in the Gatare commune. Each farmer has an average of only 250 trees which are hand harvested by each family. The washing station participates in a number of farmer outreach and support projects including livestock rearing and Farmer Hub projects focused on strengthening cooperatives and improving yields. Community organization and transparency from the washing station are crucial to ensuring economic stability and long term social and environmental support.
